New Town is the easiest part of Kolkata to move into, and also the one with the most formalities, because almost every home is inside a gated society. Here is the checklist our team gives tenants moving into flats in Action Areas I, II and III.
Before the truck arrives
- Confirm the society’s move-in rules: many need a “move-in” slot booked with the facility office, an NOC from the owner, and a deposit for the lift.
- Get the owner’s written permission letter on hand for the security gate.
- Check the flat inventory against the agreement and photograph everything, including meter readings.
Day one and two: society and police
- Register at the society office: tenant form, ID copies, photos, agreement copy. You will get the resident app access or gate cards.
- Submit the tenant verification form at the New Town police station under Bidhannagar Police, or through the society’s verification partner. Our police verification guide covers the documents.
Utilities
- Electricity: WBSEDCL in most of New Town; the meter usually stays in the owner’s name and you pay the bill. Set up online payment.
- Water: supplied through the society; charges are part of maintenance.
- Cooking gas: piped gas is spreading through New Town societies; otherwise transfer or take a new LPG connection.
- Internet: most societies have two or three fibre providers wired in; ask the facility office which ones.
Getting around
Buses from New Town bus stand and along Biswa Bangla Sarani connect to Karunamoyee, Sector V, Ultadanga and Howrah. App cabs and autos cover the rest. The airport is about twenty minutes via Chinar Park. The metro line through New Town is still under construction; do not plan your commute around it yet.
Daily life
- Groceries: society shops, the markets near New Town bus stand, and supermarkets in City Centre 2 and Axis Mall.
- Hospitals: Tata Medical Center, Ohio Hospital and several multi-speciality hospitals within a short drive; 24-hour pharmacies along the main roads.
- Weekends: Eco Park, the convention centre events, Nazrul Tirtha cinema, and the restaurant strips in Action Area I.
